Alternative Capitals: Unpacking the Adaptability of Sudanese Arrivals to Neighbouring Capitals
A Case Study Report
The Alternative Capitals Study seeks to understand the lived experiences of Sudanese who relocated to neighbouring Egypt and Uganda after the outbreak of the Sudan war on 15th April, 2023. To do this, the study focused on two individual case studies as a window to shed light on their unique lived experiences. Using qualitative methodologies, the study relied on in-depth interviews, audiovisual documentation of daily life, and social media listening to explore key themes, including gender and generational dynamics, economic revival, familiarity with host countries, the role of social networks, and the temporality of migration. Two male participants representing multigenerational, mixed-gender households in Egypt and Uganda were selected as the primary case studies, supplemented by secondary literature and online posts identified through Meltwater social media monitoring. This multi-faceted approach sought to contextualize the personalized experiences of the two case study subjects by exploring the publicly shared sentiments of other Sudanese online. This further highlighted that despite some shared similarities, experiences of alternative capitals are highly diverse and personalized.
